And so after and all too brief sojourn in London we return. I always leave home base much earlier than I need to so we left our place in Selsdon which is somewhat south of East Croydon over two hours before the train's scheduled departure. I take the view that if you leave earlier then you need to, if anything goes wrong along the way it normally rights itself after a period of time so there's...

Day 6 – St Albans – modern and ancient in one city
This was one of our quickest journeys going directly from Brighton via our stop East Croydon to Saint Albans , fast from St. Pancras. It was 49 minutes in total; the train whizzed by the countryside. So, (roll of drums) here is the man(above) who gave his name to the city. St.Albans is an incredibly sophisticated town that combines the ancient with the modern. The market according to Saint...
Day 5 – Liberties and Battersea Power Station (again)
Liberties Regent Street has a long tradition of supplying materials for dressmaking and clothes in general. Francoise had not visited it for over 25 years so we decided that now was the time. I saw a very nice gentleman's jacket for 850 pounds and a delightful tape measure for 15 pounds. They are used to dealing with the rich and famous. The decor and layout could be that of an Elizabethan...
Day 4 – a windy day in Brighton
Rail System 1965 One of the things I love about London is the ease of communication north south. Historically this was not always the case where trains traveled to and from London terminal stations such as Victoria, Waterloo, Kings Cross etc. These days there is a train that goes from Bedford via St. Alban's through Central London to East Croydon and thence to Brighton. It does it far...
Day 3 – Doing nothing in London (in theory)
So we decided to basically do nothing and just be with my sister Philippa for most of the day. On Sunday morning she gets picked up and taken to church so meanwhile we decided to go to Croydon to do shopping at Primark. On the way to Primark there was a street market which was getting into gear and we bought two Portuguese specialty pastries for two pounds each which are small but delicious....
Day 2 – The changing face of London
For this journey I'm going to focus on the images that I took on the grounds that one picture is worth a thousand words but I will also do a summary of the day. As if the normal busy sunny day traffic was not enough we had to suffer from a Palestinian protest outside the Houses of Parliament. Françoise decided to take the number 24 bus to the Mall Gallery to save her legs but I decided to walk....
