Trip to Swansea

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Waiting for the outward journey. This is an example of why I always keep my camera at hand.

Wednesday was the day that I allocated to go to Swansea by train and enable Françoise to have a swim in the Olympic size national swimming pool which is part of a very ambitious Sports Complex in Swansea. We caught the 10.40 train from Cardiff Central to Swansea, a journey of about an hour. The cost for us both using our Two Together card was £18.70.

It was very pleasant to take a break from the car especially as Wales, outside the motorways and main roads, are not noted for wide roads. We took a bus along the coast and arrived adjacent to this swimming pool.

Unfortunately, Wednesdays was the day when they divided the 50 meter Olympic pool into two parts of 25 meters. Never the less, Françoise had a wonderful swim taking about an hour in total. The other part of the pool was occupied by a water polo team. I was very impressed by the keen athletic young men and women that I saw.

I went to an adjacent hospital across the street to enjoy the cafe and had some coffee and pasta. We went back to the Center of Swansea walking along the sandy beach and then a local bus and made our way to the market which is similar to Cardiff market in the availability of fresh food particularly seafood. Françoise saw some oysters at £1.09 each. She asked the seller if he could open the oysters but he replied that he could not because in order to produce takeaway food he would need another license.

You find some wonderful old-fashioned shops of which the picture below is an example.  .

Back to Swansea station to find the 16.23 train for London waiting for us. Whereas the outward journey was quite empty, the return journey was full and many of the seats booked. We sat with some young students full of the joys of spring, engaged in very lively a conversation. There are some very fine youngsters coming on and it gives me such a joy when I see people communicating in an uninhibited and intellectual fashion.
