Cardiff National Museum – far from boring

Reading Time: 4 minutes

After a late start we took the 92 bus from the centre to Penarth which is a Suburb of Cardiff right by the sea. It has an old-fashioned wooden pier and Assembly Hall that looks nothing from the outside but when you get inside is very spacious and there was an exhibition going on at the time, works by Kevin Stone who after an accident at work lost the use of his right arm and had to learn to paint with this left hand. You would never have guessed this by looking at the quality of the painting.

Incidentally, I noticed that the standard of care of local parks not only in Cardiff but in other areas is extremely high and it was a pleasure to walk down to the sea through the delightful Alexandra Park. We returned to Cardiff market where we had some delicious oysters and some Greek Street food. Françoise bought a Masala chai tea from the herbs stand and some Welsh cakes freshly made.

We walked to the Cardiff National Museum and saw a great exhibition about miners in Wales, there life and work plus the effect of the closures of the mines.

There was a series of paintings on one wall and I realized that I was able to concentrate on each painting because they were not in rows otherwise I think the mechanical symmetry of the horizontal rows would have overwhelmed even the strong content of the images.

Look at those eyes. Determination and alienation.

A family in the motor cycle trade

The longest paragraph I have ever seen. Completely unreadable. I gave up a third of the way through.

A wonderful 1960’s clothes washer

Gosh, these were post war living conditions

The type of couple who would have celebrated their 50th anniversary with their children and grand children

‘naughy’ kids – we would have called then ‘ragamuffins’ but full of fun. Definition: Use the word ragamuffin to affectionately tease your friend who shows up late to brunch with messy hair, dark circles under her eyes, and her shirt on backwards. In essence, you are calling her a shabbily clad street urchin.

my goodness, the symbolism is too much for me.

nnnn

Adjacent to the museum we turned a corner and found some people campaigning for respect of Life i.e against abortion. I will always take part if I see campaigns and I talked to the lady on the left who had come down from Norwich which is about 249 miles away and she is a volunteer. We spoke about fear, the difficulty in getting through to people, the difficulty in getting anyone to take any notice of anything and we did have a lot in common so that was unexpected pleasure. Most of the helpers were wearing cameras just in case people became too agitated.

On our way back to the bus station.

We returned to the hotel and had a nibble meal followed by a game of Scrabble. A beautiful evening it was indeed.
