Encounter with a pigeon in Wetherspoons

Reading Time: 4 minutes

This diary is two days compressed into one. Sunday 28th July – As the weather was good we decided to go to the famous Cheddar car boot sale about which I refer my readers to the many references within this volume. We showed up at about 11:15 and the selling was way beyond its peak with some people discounting items to one pound or 50p. If you want  second hand clothes especially children’s clothes, DVDs of a certain age, tools, plus miscellaneous bric a brac then this is the place for you.

There are many eastern European visitors at the Boot sale and I would guess that the lifestyle and the prices would be very attractive to them. The fair is so big that it takes at least an hour to walk the length and breadth of the spaces. They are laid out over a whole field. There is also an indoor area to be used in case of rain but the hall was only about half full with visit a numbers to match. On my way around I was attracted by this amazing car, the largest I’ve ever seen, obviously an American six seater and probably more seats. It puts my Volvo V70 in some persepctive.

Almost an institution is the man selling meat from a huge long custom built vehicle. He is a one man show of entertainment, is very good at working the audience, and gives out huge amounts of food for families which can save a lot of money in what you would pay in the supermarket. I do not buy there because there’s only one of me who eats meat and we have very little room in our fridges to store perishable items but I recommend any family person or indeed a restaurant person who wants good value for money to attend. You can’t miss him either the sight or the hearing

Off down the road to the Cider Barn which is about as eccentric a place as you can find in the area and worth coming for this reason. Jason the landlord has his own inimitable touch. Basically what you see is what you get. He has his own loyal clientele. These illustrations below will give you some idea of the atmosphere of this place.

For some unknown reason these two beautiful specimens were parked in a side car park. Were they being exhibited or just sitting there in all their glory?

Monday 29th July (my goodness where did the month go)

The day was event free except for one feature. I went to the recycle to get rid of some garden rubbish and on the way back to tidied to stop off at Wetherspoons on the High Street. After ordering my coffee I noticed that a pigeon was desperately flapping its wings to try and get out of the upper windows and of course failing. Pigeons in do not understand glass. I discussed with the staff throwing a wet towel at it to try and drag it down. The staff were puzzled and non-communicative.

I left then to it and went home but figured out there was a way of doing it so I got a fishing net which I had at home and a long pole from an extendable saw, attached the two together and drove back. I marched in with the long and ungainly pole, and after a few attempts I dislodged the pigeon from the upper windows who then flew towards an emergency door obviously on the ground level. A member of staff quickly and gratefully opened the door and the pigeon was gone.

For my efforts I got a round of applause from the gathered crowd. There is a first for everything and this was the first time in my life I have done such a thing and I would do it again because I have great respect for the Wetherspoons brand and anything I can do to help I will gladly do
